Rosemary School
Lead Teacher Since:
2006
Motivation:
I enjoy seeing the grins and hearing the giggles from the students when we are participating in the crazy activities we do for moving and choosing, Terry Fox Run, and other activities throughout the year. I also enjoy being asked what makes this or that healthy, or "see what a healthy lunch I have today" from every grade! What motivates me is knowing that I am affecting more than one child's eating habits and encouraging healthy lifestyles.

Highlights of Healthy Eating:
We have gone from one hot lunch per month to three or four hot lunches per month! We are a rural school, so most of our hot lunches are prepared in our school kitchen, choosing from healthy recipes, whole wheat buns, and ensuring there are veggies and fruits included with each choice! Some hot lunch ideas have been chili with a whole wheat bun, hot turkey sub on whole wheat with a side of corn, hamburger soup with whole wheat bun, chicken wraps with apple sauce, sloppy joes on a whole wheat bun with veggies and dip on the side, and spaghetti with ceaser salad. We have also provided healthy choices as prizes--smoothies, fruit to go. We also participated in the Healthy Door Decorating Challenge with smoothies as prizes!

Highlights of Active Living:
Our school has participated in the Terry Fox run annually, and lots of the Moving and Choosing Winter/Summer Active activities, such as ice cube hunt, summer walks, winter walks, ball toss challenge and our most recent activity was a cross grade grouping that took our students through five different stations over 45 minutes--obstacle course, beach volley ball, rock/paper/scissors baseball, tunnel kickball, and walk/run/skip the track! Great fun was had by students and staff alike in this last Summer Active event. Our school has been very fortunate to have won a number of prizes for participating in these events!

Rolling Hills School
Lead Teacher Since:
"As long as I can remember"
Motivation:
I enjoy being a Lead Teacher because I like the chance to motivate as many kids as possible to be physically fit and active. It also helps to keep me in line as I have to practice what I preach...or the kids get on my case.

Highlights of Healthy Eating:
I am most pleased with the fact that we have gotten rid of all pop, chocolate bars and chips from our school concession. We have moved to selling only healthy foods and our sales have not slowed down. We have also implemented a healthy hot lunch program that has been far better received then expected. It also keeps the kids away from only eating hot dogs and pizza, they are now exposed to a large variety of healthy foods such as chef's salads, chicken caesar wraps and Mexican enchiladas.

Highlights of Active Living:
Myself and the administrator, with the help of the entire staff, have begun a monthly physical activity for the entire school and community members. These activitie have included: the Terry Fox Walk, swimming at the Leisure Centere, a Jingle Bell run, whole school skating, Jump Rope for Heart, to our finale for the year...a school wide (as well as two neighbouring schools) mini-marathon.
